Preparing every child to become a successful individual in an ever evolving world

There are lots of ways to help your child practise reading...

  • Read aloud with your child daily: Reading helps your child's wellbeing, develops imagination and has educational benefits too. Just a few minutes a day can have a big impact on children of all ages. Tick the box for the correct day, once you have heard your child read.
  • Share stories using pictures in the book: Pictures are enjoyable to look at, capture children's attention and help them make sense of what they are reading. Ask your child to describe the pictures they see, ask questions about what the characters are doing and why they might be doing it.
  • Encourage reading choice: Give children lots of opportunities to read different things in their own time - it does not just have to be books. There is fiction, non-fiction, poetry, comics, magazines, recipes and much more.
  • Encourage reading with expression: Model using different and funny voices to bring characters to life and emphasise words.
  • Talk about books: This is a great way to make connections, develop understanding and make reading even more enjoyable. Talk about the front cover, what you have been reading, share ideas and make predictions,
  • Please write a comment in your child's reading record once a week: Comments could relate to any vocabulary they found tricky, how expressive they were, whether you had a discussion about the book or simply whether your child enjoyed the book.
  • Watch the weekly Ruth Miskin video sent home by your child's phonics teacher.
  • Make sure you pronounce the sounds correctly.
  • Practise pronouncing the sounds in the pure form that is without the 'uh' at the end. You can practise saying the sounds by yourself or with your child by clicking on the following link: https://www.ruthmiskin.com/parentsandcarers/
